And this is why I love the internet... if you do not know the answer to a question, ask it, and the odds are good that someone else out there will have an answer, and be willing to share it.

Thanks for the information, Ritchie! I totally agree - if you are going to have to generate up and fabricate specialized, weaker handloads for the rifle, that definitely ruins the point of a 100% paper-free gun that can shoot "modern" ammunition.

Of course, that said, 8mm Mauser is still produced, and while it is not a SHTF caliber to most people, a records-free firearm (in its original, unmolested form) has a lot of appeal to it.

In his book "Bolt Action Rifles", Frank de Haas classifies the Chilean Mauser as a variation of the 93-95 Mauser with the advantage of a safety lug on the bolt. He does consider it "marginal" for the .308. If you only fed it tailored handloads or cast bullet loads it would be fine, but why volunteer for such a limitation?

Cavalier: Not being familiar with Wisconsin's laws, I cannot speak as to the legality of carrying on one's own property, especially with their peculiar school zone ban (also being legally challenged at the moment). Here in Tennessee, you can carry whatever you like on your own property, so the cops would be doubly in the wrong.

Sandy: Good point - if this money came out of the police officers' paychecks directly, it would be siginficantly better, though those salaries were paid by the public as well. Firing definitely would have solved that problem, though. Still, I would rather that the city's taxpayers lose a little money in exchange for potentially/hopefully more-responsible, more-law-respecting, less-over-reacting police officers... but, I guess, I am not in their position.

Eseell: Well, if the poles start spinning fast enough, the induced current in any electrical or electronic equipment would be something indeed!

Qbert: Eh, yeah, like I said, it probably does sensationalize the product, and maybe that will help it sell, and if it sells, the guy who wrote the advertisement gets his paycheck, so the cycle of life continues. Still, though, what with Katrina and Haiti and everything else that has been going on, you would think the writer would find something a little more realistic to field.

Standard Mischief: Yeah, that Y2K thing is going to be a... wait... ;)

It is not a win from the prospective that innocent tax payers are paying for incompetent officers not doing their job. That $10,000 comes from our pockets (the city of Racine's taxes....). that is the only sad part. Would rather had the cops fired.......

This is an especially onerous since he was on his own property. Can it count as 'carry' when you haven't carried it off your porch?
