2A Rally – 16FEB13 – AAR

I attended another pro-rights rally at the AZ state capitol yesterday.  The event was scheduled 12-2 and my wife, son, and I were able to stay until about 1:15.  There was a decent turnout, but it seemed a little smaller than the last rally I attended.  This time they had a PA system, but I still couldn’t hear them very well.

I saw considerably more long guns being OC’d than last time, but far fewer handguns OC’d.  This surprised me quite a bit, but I guess that was just the makeup of the crowd.  Also a suggestion: If you’re going to OC, ensure your holster has more than just friction retention.  This is of particular importance if you’re going to be around a crowd, IMO.

There were 2-3 local media outlets in attendance, but I didn’t see much coverage after the fact.

I saw people from just about every age group and race and both genders were well represented.

And lastly there’s that guy.  I have less vitriol for the Confederate battle flag than many folks I know, but I don’t think it had a place at this rally.  It’s too divisive (and we’re already dealing with a divisive issue).  I’m not going to tell people what to do and what not to do, but I will say this doesn’t help our cause.

I also had the opportunity to meet Kevin from ExurbanLeague and Robert and Jackie from Great Satan, Inc.  They’re good people and I hope to meet up with them again sometime down the line.  If time permits (HA!), I’ll see about shooting some matches with them.  If you’re not reading their blogs, you’re missing out.  Both sites tend to lean a little more conservative than I do, but they’ve got some solid insights.

Allegedly, there’s another rally next Saturday, but I will not be in attendance for that and don’t really have any details.

I would have gone to the protests in Colorado the other day, except I didn’t even find out about the bills being pushed by our state whores and senate until after all the protests ended. They’re scaring away the few jobs we have left, too.

I think the aristocrats in power are intentionally trying to drive jobs away, as those will take Republicans with them, leaving the state occupied with unemployed, welfare-dependant sheep.

Perhaps I should start gearing up for the zombie apocalypse.

  • From outside of AZ, the only reason I knew anything was going on in CO was due to Magpul’s updates. It seems pretty asinine in this economy to try to push out 600+ jobs and $30+million in tax revenue, but if that’s what the good people of CO’s representatives want….we’ll take Magpul in AZ :)

You might be onto something with driving jobs away and getting rid of the makers, but they have to walk a fine line – else they’ll end up like CA with a massive budget crunch and not enough people making money to tax themselves out of.

Some might say we’re already in the zombie apocalypse…I mean, Obama got elected, twice. Nevermind the fact that the best candidates the GOP could find were McCain and Romney. I think we’re in some sort of twilight zone.

McCain and Romney weren’t the best we had, they’re just what got brought forward because they were “electable.” I forget who my favorite was in ’08, but in ’12 my favorite was Herman Cain(yes, partly because he’s black and I suspected it would take a black man to beat a black man).

Unfortunately, as I complained in November, we’ve been pushing whoever’s the most “electable” during the primaries and then sticking to our morals during the general election, instead of the other way around like it should be. I voted for the guy I wanted on the ballot during the primaries, not the guy I thought would get the most votes(again, don’t remember, Cain was already outby then). He didn’t get on, so I voted for the guy who wasn’t a communist.

  • I said “the GOP could find” meaning the GOP as a whole selected. I agree there were better candidates in both elections, but that party is so bass ackwards they keep picking losers. GWB was a loser too, but he managed to get elected twice.

Maybe the GOP will figure their stuff out by 2016. Looks like Rubio and Rand Paul are already setting themselves up for a run.

  • That also depends on where the holster is placed on your body – when I open carry, the holster is invariably at the 3-3:30 spot, so my elbow/arm naturally rests on the holster. Still might not stop a dedicated gunjacker, but the warning I get from one arm should help the other arm deploy a knife and make the individual’s life a lot more interesting. That is also the reason I have become a fan of fixed blades…

That said, there may have been fewer people at this rally, but that is definitely still a respectable number of folks gathered about… One can only hope our duly-elected representatives will take notice, but if that were commonplace, we might not be in the mess we currently find ourselves in…

  • A fair point. I’m not saying retention fixes every problem, nor is it a substitute for awareness. Just that I think it increases your odds of successful retention should the situation ever arise.

Yes, it was still a good turnout. The biggest threat to the second amendment in AZ, at the state level, is complacency and lack of interest. A turnout like this is a good reminder for those representatives where we stand.

Partly I think it was bad publicity for the rally. I went to a fun store in downtown Avondale before the event and THEY DIDN’T EVEN KNOW THERE WAS A RALLY.

Every fun store in the valley should have at least gotten some flyers.

This website was the only place I heard about it. Probably because I’m not a member of the GOP, and by extension the Tea Party.

Too many rallies with no “street team” promotion dilutes them. There’s ANOTHER one this weekend.

Also, I think every one of Ableser’s bigoted offenses against the Constitution are hemmed up in committee and will die there.

  • Yeah, not enough boots on the ground for these things. I heard about it through facebook courtesy of a friend, but never saw it mentioned anywhere else. I don’t frequent the AZ gun boards, so maybe it was mentioned there, but I dunno.

Yeah, it’s good that none of the gun control slop proposed in our state will ever see the light of day.

  • It was great to meet you at the rally, Skas.

You are correct, there weren’t enough people involved in planning and promoting the event. It was a grassroots effort by a few people who had never tried to put on a rally before. They didn’t even have the insurance required to get the “assembly permit” until Wednesday. They were begging for a PA and a generator the day before the event. There have been so many 2A events planned on different days that people were getting confused about the dates. I’m surprised the event even happened.

I think the TEA party 2A event will have better turnout, as they’re experienced with planning events at the capitol and getting the word out to the media in advance. Unfortunately, the 2A event will be saddled with TEA party baggage.

  • Great to meet you, Skas, and I share your feelings on the Stars And Bars at this sort of thing. Tact, someone once said, is the girdle that shapes the truth.

My favourite, though, was the guy in the Guy Fawkes mask who had the “One Nation Under God” sign. Either he has a better understanding of The Gunpowder Plot and who Guy Fawkes REALLY was than 99.9% of the people behind such masks, or he’s just as clueless as they are and wanted to show it off a bit….

  • This was obviously photo-shopped!
If people HAD shown up with all these guns, there would have been BLOOD. IN. THE. STREETS!

Impossible. Everyone knows that civilians don’t know how to safely handle guns. Especially all those high power assault clip pistols that are concealable on the belt!

And if this was truly grassroots then the signs would be alike… matching… because….because…… you would all be thinking alike. Yeah, that’s it!

Nobody needs to assemble in the first place! And why do you need to let the government have the “value” of your opinion? They know best! That’s why they were elected.

No one is coming for your guns! Yet….

  • @Capitalist Pig – Hopefully the organizers learned a few lessons and will have better luck in the future. Looking forward to the AAR if you guys make it to the TEA party event this weekend.

@ExurbanKevin – I hadn’t heard that saying before, but seems pretty appropriate.
Yeah, most of those wearing the Guy Fawkes mask have no idea about the full story. Just what they saw on V for Vendetta and what Anonymous does elsewhere.

    @Cargosquid – You got us! :)
