Does anyone have a spare Mark 1 Mod 0 M4 collapsible stock we could borrow or buy for cheap (I would be willing to trade a patch or two for it…)? Just the stock, not the buffer tube or anything.
Better Half and I are bony enough that having a standard plastic stock jammed up against our collar bones (like it will be during prone exercises) is not exactly the most comfortable thing in the world, and given her shoulder issues already, I figured a simple pad would be an easy fix and well worth it. The only problem is that the actual butt on the Knoxx Axiom is not exactly M4-spec, in that the endplate is significantly thicker, and the dorsal sling point is actually on the bottom of the butt, rather than on the inside slope up to the release switch – you can see that bottom sling nub here, though that is sadly not Better Half’s rifle.
Suffice to say, this gets in the way of the pad, and requires her to use one of the side sling points on the butt, which, when the sling is placed under tension, makes the whole gun twist a little. We do know the Axiom takes all M4-style collapsible stocks, but despite assembling an AR-15, I do not have the right kind of spare stock handy (never bought one, since I was never going to use it… seemed rather superfluous), so here we are.
I know someone has one of those things tucked away in a closet somewhere…

I’ll tell you what is simple, cheap, and works well. My dad’s uncle, who is an Appleseed instructor in OH, while on an Appleseed with him two years ago took 1″ or 1 1/2″ stick and peel rubber pad, stuck it on the butt of my Marlin 795 (which is not really a great gun for a guy who is 6’4 like me) and then wrapped the pad with bandage tape like this: http://www.horse.com/item/3m-vetrap-bandaging-tape/SLT700304/ It worked great for making the stock a little bit longer for me, plus it soften the butt for my shoulder (although, .22lr doesn’t bother my shoulder or collarbone one bit after 500 rounds without padding.) Two years later it’s still on my rife and works well. I can send you a picture if you want to see it.
Question, why does the rear sling attachment point on the stock affect you for Appleseed? When you shoot Appleseed, you disconnect the sling from the rear point and wrap it around your upper support arm. It’s not attached to the stock at all, just the handguard/forend.
You did buy a cheapo GI web sling, right? They work very well and are far cheaper than the full-on leather competition slings.
Didn’t you used to have a “subscribe to this post” button for fools like me who forget to tick the box when they comment?
@ Matthew: The pad seems to work pretty well, so at least there is that. It just has trouble attaching to the butt with its strange configuration.
@ Sean D Sorrentino: I was under the potentially mistaken impression that Appleseed focused predominantly on the “hasty sling” concept.
And not so far as I am aware…
they will teach you hasty sling if you want them to, but that’s not the focus. Instead of worrying about the stock, buy the cheap 15-16 dollar GI web sling. Get Uncle Mike’s sling swivels.
Ah, then I misunderstood. We already have sling swivels and the sling the Appleseed store itself sells, so those are good to go. Now it is just a matter of ensuring Better Half’s comfort so she can focus on the learning and not the annoyances
.
I spent the cash on a nicer shooting jacket. About $120. I thought it worked well. I don’t want to think what my elbows would have looked like otherwise.
Shooting jackets for women are hard to find though. Unfortunately.
This is the one I have.

They say they make women’s jackets
I have an M4 stock if you’re still looking for one.
I ordered a shooting jacket from Fred’s M14 surplus MONTHS ago, have followed up three times, and still no order. Kind of absurd.
@ Sean D Sorrentino: We have invested in sleeping bag pads for the ground parts of the exercise – all of $7 each, and with some carpet remnants we have left over, that should be just fine.
Air rifle put me of two minds about shooting jackets, and I am not likely to buy one unless I can try and fit it on beforehand.
And Creedmore may say they sell women’s jackets, but I dare you to try to order one…
@ Heather: True.
@ Chris from AK: I think Oleg was able to dig one up for me, thanks!
And, yeah, Fred’s used to be awesome, but, lately, things seem to be falling apart… I think he is just getting old and too busy, honestly.
I have a standard M4 stock as well if you still need one
Thanks! I think/hope I have lined up a couple
