big badda-boom

Everyone remember the Bighorn Model 89 – the .500 S&W Magnum lever-action rifle I still want, still do not own, and still cannot afford, but helped make this awesome motivational image for:

My understanding is that it will be featured on tomorrow’s (Wednesday’s) American Guns as the folks at Gunsmoke try to turn it into the "ultimate zombie gun".

I do not think .500S&W takes very well to suppressing, its onboard magazine capacity is not exactly huge (all of seven rounds), and reloading it will take time you probably will not have, but a 0.8 ounce slug of lead traveling at around 2000 feet per second and carrying just over 3000 foot-pounds of force is enough to muck up anything‘s cranial cavity. I wonder if it can reliably feed/chamber the infamous 700 grain .500 S&W round (scroll all the way to the bottom) – 1.6 ounces of lead screaming out of a lever-action rifle at 1200 fps is something I want. Badly. If for no better reason than "because I can".

  • I’m not quite so ambitious as you; the .500 S&W Magnum rifle I have on my five-guns meme list is the NEF Handi-Rifle. While it’s only a single-shot firearm, it does have the advantage of being less than 1/7th the price of the Bighorn Model 89. In fact, I have one on special order from my FLGS* at this very moment…. :-D

*I ordered it before Bud’s had them back in stock, so I’ll end up waiting longer than I might have. No matter, because .50-caliber!

  • Shiny!

I’d probably get one if I had the opportunity.

I don’t know about all that, but she sure is puurty.

  • @ AuricTech: Hey, .50 is a .50 is a .50 in my book. I just love this one because it looks so beautifully classic, but it throws out a round that causes anti-rights cultists to soil their pants in reflexive terror.

The contrast gives me a fit of the giggles.

Of course, the Handi-Rifle has much the same aesthetics, so there is that :) .

@ SteveG: Hell, who would not? I am a typically “tactical” rifle kind of guy, and I would have no problems sticking that thing in my safe.

    @ agirlandhergun: Exactly!
