so simple a caveman could understand

Given my rather public love affair with pretty pictures, at least when it comes to demonstrating / illustrating / explaining concepts and arguments that might otherwise be rather difficult to express, it should come as no surprise that I thoroughly approve of this series of posts written by George at Newbie Shooter:

Examining the data:

Running the numbers:

And Another view of deaths:

(Images shamelessly stolen from their parent posts.)

What was his conclusion? Well, to quote from the second post:

Those numbers, when added, give us the number of “gun deaths” per year. We can compare this number with the total number of deaths, and it gives us a sense of how big a problem this really is.

[...]

As you can see, “gun deaths” are consistently about 1.2% of all deaths in a given year.

[...]

Maybe we should ring a bell for something else…

Quite so. As I myself demonstrated a little while ago, in comparison, "gun deaths" are a nowhere near a "major health issue", and, as Bob S. showed, the opportunity cost of "gun control" is significant, in that the efforts and funds expended on "gun control" could be more usefully spent on far more pressing issues which claim far more lives each year.

It almost makes one question the motives of “gun control” extremists, what with their moneys and efforts potentially saving far more lives in other pursuits.

But there is one, sadly fatal flaw in all of these pictures and arguments – they tend to rely on facts and logic, two of the things that dyed-in-the-wool anti-rights cultists find absolutely abhorrent. Still, when folks still on the fence, or just starting to trend in one direction or the other, start pulling out the tried-and-false "statistical" arguments of the "gun control" movement, pictures like these could do a world of good for pointing out the underlying fallacies involved.

And, through all of this, remember possibly the supreme argument against more “gun control”

Where the hell do you get off thinking you can tell me I can’t own a gun? I don’t care if every other gun owner on the planet went out and murdered somebody last night. I didn’t. So piss off.

It would not matter if those charts showed something entirely different – you and I have broken no laws, and thus anti-rights cultists have no cause, no standing, and no reason to limit our rights or actions so long as they do not detrimentally affect other people. Remember that.
