Act of Valor: In this day and age, I sincerely hope and pray they would not actually need it, but should the SEALs ever find themselves desiring a recruitment video, I dare say this would do in a pinch (though, be forewarned – they do not shy away from the cold, hard realities of special forces operations, and they put you through an emotional wringer at the end).
(Brief aside to the nitwits amongst us: if you are honestly, non-ironically, non-sarcastically whinging about the substandard acting capabilities of active-duty United States Navy SEALs, you are either an idiot or were not paying attention… or both, in which case you should sit down and shut up; adults are speaking. )

The husband and I went to see this on Sunday and after we got home I asked if you’d been (as this had yet to post) because given your past service, I was hopeful you’d like it.
Unfortunately, we’d read some of the nitwits you mentioned before we went. If it hadn’t been for that, I don’t know that I’d have noticed that the acting was substandard (although I’ve seen worse from hollywood’s actors). I do think it’s important to note that the action scenes were not where anyone should find fault with the acting.
Miniguns trump acting any day of the week, at least in my book.
@ mrswizardpc: Unfortunately my weekend was a little packed, so I was not able to make it out to see it until yesterday, but, yeah, definitely liked it.
I cannot say as though I ever had the honor of meeting an actual SEAL, but I did serve with an ex-SWCC Senior Chief, and freighted around some Force Recon folks from the Marines, and if they are representative of the SPECWAR community, I dare say the movie was perfectly accurate, “bad acting” or no. Interesting folks… perfectly professional, tremendously dry (at least the ones I interacted with), and though I never saw any of them “in action”, I remain tremendously thankful they are on our side.
‘Course, on the flip side, you would have to be mildly insane to go through some of their training, let alone what they do for a living…
@ bluesun: I dare say live-fire miniguns trump acting in the books of anyone who matters.
You do know “Act of Valor” was originally started as just a recruiting video, right? Somehow the producers got the Navy to agree to turn it into a feature film instead. And, yes, the SEALS and other SF units are having a hard time recruiting, hence the need for the video.
I saw that the Admiral mentioned that, but then he started going on about “recruiting minorities”, and I confess I tuned right out – you recruit those people with the appropriate skills and mindsets, regardless of their genetic makeup.
Bit sad they need help recruiting, though, especially what with their being so much in the news these days (contrary to their desires, no doubt, but still).
