Time to get serious

Alternate title: Stupid NFA and it’s stupid regulation of what should be common safety equipment

Remember back in January when I said I have a goal of buying a cheap .22 suppressor this year?

Well, I’ve got just enough money saved that it’s time to start looking at my options.

I could go with a Gemtech Outback IID. MSRP is $325, but the only price I’ve seen locally is $350 at Ronnie Barrett’s store (Yes, that Ronnie Barrett). There is another Gemtech dealer in town, but when I went to go look at their selection I was told, with a straight face while standing in front of a display case with 2 MGs and several SBRs, that “Suppressors are too dangerous to keep on the shop floor. You have to make an appointment to see them.” So that particular retailer is out, forever. Not even going to buy holsters from them anymore.

I’ve got a guy locally who is an NFA dealer selling Tactical Innovations TAC52s for, I think $299 (maybe $249). I like that they are user servicable (like the Outback IID), but I don’t like that I’d have to have that special wrench. And its an older model.

…and those are basically my choices, because every local FFL I’ve found that can do NFA stuff wants to charge $150-$250 to do a transfer. BLEG: Is there a way to find all the FFLs in the area that do NFA?

[insert muttering about what would happen if muffler shops operated the same way, including the giant govt tax]

So, what say you, internets?

  • Well, the ATF themselves can tell you of every FFL in the country… but which one will do NFA is another story.

Did you email the shop in question to tell the owner why you aren’t going to spend your money there any longer?

  • Sooo… a baffled steel tube is more dangerous than a machine gun. Riiiight. And I thought all the BS about the Judge was the worst gun counter heresy possible…

For reference, the standard NFA transfer fee around here (all of the State of Oregon) is $50. I’ve literally never seen a different fee than that charged for the transfer of NFA items.

Sounds like you need to not go local. Hopefully there is a bigger town you could drive to from there without too much hassle?

    @ Ananael:
    GOLDMINE! Thank you!
Apparently my Google-Fu was off yesterday

  • That transfer fee is outrageous and unacceptable.

During the ammo shortages of Obama’s first 2 years I made a note of every dealer who cranked up his ammo prices to take advantage of the demand. I stopped shopping at their stores. I would be tempted to do the same in your situation.

I have a Gemtech OBII and love it. Have another one of their products on order too.

    Good luck!

    to Karl:

While I sympathize with not havng high prices, when demand goes up it makes SENSE for prices to go up with it….Raising prices due to higher demand helps to prevent shortages. Better to be able to get a box of ammo for $50 if you really need it than see an empty spot on the shelf above a $15 price tag.

…not that I want prices to be high, you understand.
