Last week, Joan Peterson (aka “Japete” on her misnamed “Common Gunsense” weblog – link intentionally omitted) took it upon herself to appear before the Minnesota House Public Safety Committee as a representative of the anti-rights, pro-criminal cult of America, and speak out against the bill relating to the use of deadly force in defense of home and person (Castle Doctrine, in short), pistol permit renewals, and the comprehensiveness of background checks.
Before she even gave the speech she had prepared, she whinged about being called out as a “liar”, saying, and I quote:
I need to start out by saying first, Chair Cornish, I do resent being called a liar before I’ve even appeared before you to make your remarks…
… and shortly afterwards, she brought her whining to Twitter:
Gun rights lawyer says gun control advocates are liars before we had a chance to testify at hearing today. Jerk!!!
Unfortunately for her, and unsurprisingly to the rest of us, the simple truth is that she lied about being called a liar:
So what did Representative Tony Cornish actually say?
… the opposition will come up, and, um, if it’s anything like the claims that have been made in the paper and in the media and some of the emails, well many of them are false and just downright lies…
Chair Cornish did not call Joan a liar, and thus she lied about his actions. Irony, thy name is Joan Peterson.
Of course, you and I both know that Joan Peterson has lied in the past, and thus calling her out as a liar before she spoke at the Committee would not only be wholly appropriate, it would also be 100% accurate, thus relegating her “resentment” to the “Who cares?” category in very short order. Unfortunately, just like every last one of her arguments, Joan Peterson is not well-grounded in this thing we like to call ‘reality’, and is thus prone to such irrational outbursts as we see above and have observed in the past.
Sadly, this disconnect from reality is pervasive throughout Joan Peterson’s behavior, and we can only hope she gets the help she obviously needs soon… no one should have to suffer from such a debilitating condition as she does.

I think I’ve noticed this with her responses to people posting on her blog. She literally does not comprehend what is being written, or said in this case. I’m starting to believe there really is something else wrong with her.
I was looking for this video after the argument about it on her comments, so this is well timed.
It is obvious to anyone watching that he said that he is getting emails that in some ways are complete lies. Maybe she was the author of those emails? She apparently knows the claims that were being made in those emails to know that “they were the same claims she was about to spout”.
Despite that, if you read her post about the incident, you can see that she was actually lying about the bill demanding that it removed 1-year background checks, which it doesn’t.
Typical that she, not only doesn’t understand the laws she fights for or against, but she also doesn’t understand anyone who tries to explain it to her.
@Pyrotek85 – You are completely right. I’ve followed her train wreck since she got started. I can’t look away. Reading the comments that follow… She dismisses everything anyone says unless it supports her OR she will distract by saying “you don’t make any sense”, “why did you bring that up”, and my personal favorite “I’m going to need some (links, proof, insert here) before I’m……” as if she is the judge of all this and we must provide her the evidence to support our case.
Honestly, at times I just want to comment “research it yourself.. oh wait..”.
Something that I completely missed earlier.
I am Joan Peterson, a member of the Board of Directors…of the Brady Campaign…
Not, I am Joan Peterson FOR the Brady Campaign.
Whether she wants to admit it or not, she makes no distinction between her speech as a private citizen (aka her blog) and her membership in and on the boards of anti-gun groups (Brady Campaign).
If she had appeared in front of the panel as Joan Peterson, a resident of Duluth. I would cut her a little slack but she didn’t.
Kind of puts another exclamation point on her lies — she has repeatedly said on her blog she doesn’t speak for the Brady Campaign but here she is doing what…..
You see a similar thing over here when members of the Gun Contol Network are in phone-in debates. Very few of them avoid attempting to compare gun owners to Thomas Hamilton.
Indeed, when one pro-gun expert was invited to speak at a gun control rally, the GCN members invited shouted him down with “HE’S A GUNMAN!” and physically forced him off the stage.
As you guys point out – why are they so violent?
@ Pyrotek85: As Joe Huffman says, there is a not-insignificant process failure in here entire way of thinking, and one that she seems physically incapable of overcoming… or militantly unwilling to do so, either way. Think aphasia, only so very much worse, for all parties involved.
@ Patrick: It is entirely possible that she was one of the authors of one of the lie-filled letters that the representative received… in which case, I will retract my claim that she is lying about being called a liar. But, in that case, her “resentment” is well and truly categorized in the, “Who gives a flying frak?” bin and ignored with the rest of her loony-tunes idiocy.
And, honestly, I do my best not to read her intelligence-sapping drivel, but thanks for pointing that out – the difficulties she has with plain English are frankly amazing.
@ Bob S.: Good catch! She constantly holds to the faith that all firearm owners – legal and illegal alike – are speaking for / representing the law-aibding gun owner community, but when we turn that around and point it at her, she scurries away like a cockroach from the light.
And then she turns around and voluntarily assumes the mantle of “official Brady Spokesperson”. Yeah. Those words are going to come back to haunt her, whether she wants them to or not.
@ Gareth A: They are so violent because we disagree with them, and they support gun control because they are so violent (and their projection leads them to believe we are as violent as they are). One need only spend a few minutes reading the bloodthirsty rantings of Michael Bannerman, Guy Cabot, Joan herself, and various other anti-rights nuts to clear up that question, no worries
