this is getting confusing

Is there any way to get blockquotes to show up properly inside of the Android version of Google Reader? Because the standard [blockquote] tag does not appear to provide any formatting at all when reading feeds on my phone, and I have walked away from posts thoroughly confused more than a few times now…

  • Not that I’ve seen. RSS in general seems to handle th eblockqoute tag poorly – I’ve noticed issues with it acrtoss multipel feeds and multiple readers.

  • I treat it as a puzzle. “Hmmm… I wonder where the block starts–must be… THERE!

  • I don’t know about the Google Reader app but SimpiRSS (free) on Windows Phone 7 handles it just fine.

    Greed2 seems to handle them.

  • @ Ian Argent: The funny thing is that Google Reader displays blockquotes just fine on the computer, but the port to Android seems to have introduced some oddities. Thinks like Jay G’s color and style formatting carry over, but the actual indentation of blockquotes does not.

@ bluesun: Heh… there have been more than a few times that I was reading a post, and went, “Wait, this person would NEVER write tha… er… oh… wait…” Keeps me on my toes, but, damn.

@ Joe Huffman: Sadly, the app not supporting a fairly straightforward formatting feature is an insufficient reason to fork over megabucks ;) . And I like the synchronisity of the desktop and phone applications.

@ Lynn H: Yeah, I admit to being somewhat phobic about signing over my Google account information to third parties… Prefer doing that kind of dealing straight through the Evil Empire itself.

  • Does it support user-configurable stylesheets? You could hack it better rendering yourself.

  • @Linoge – I have noted issues with blockquotes in certain websites on both the web tool and in FeedDemon. Most notable at the Volokh Conspiracy.

  • @ WallPhone: It might, but I would have no idea how to :) .

@ Ian Argent: I swear, for one of the older HTML tags out there, you would think more systems would support it properly. Still have not been able to track down that bug you noticed… sorry!

  • @Linoge: You’d like to think so, wouldn’t you.

I’ve given up on the google reader app and just use the mobile website. Still, I’ve noticed that the mobile website has the same issues with blockquotes. I think it’s an issue with google reader itself.

  • Cannot say as though I have ever seen a blockquote malfunction in the web version of the program, but I do not use that on my phone very much either… Maybe it is the platform more than the software?
