Well, since you all took my exhortation in entirely the wrong fashion, here is some gratuitous Dragon Leatherworks porn for you:
For those of you who have not been keeping up, Dennis at Dragon Leatherworks contacted me a little bit ago, and offered to create a holster in exchange for a little advertisement space. We went ’round and ’round about the design, had to get creative to actually make it fit my gun, and finally started squishing leather… and now I have this gorgeous hunk of cowflesh.
Suffice to say, I think Dennis did an outstanding job taking a concept, making it better, and then making it a reality.
An honest-to-God review is going to have to wait a few days for me to tweak a few things (to be explained in the review) and then actually wear it for a bit, but for the time being, you can mark me down as an extremely satisfied customer.
(All but the final two of the above pictures are HDR’d – if you want originals, I can probably get around to posting them. The last two pictures are just run through Picasa’s “I’m Feeling Lucky”, and the final image shows just how easy it is to create a “lightbox” – a white kitchen towel, undercabinet lights, overhead lights, and a bit of masking tape. Sure, not exactly Oleg Volk grade, but it works, and is cheap.)

Wow! That’s gorgeous.
That’s incredible. Dennis did a great job.
I like the lightbox idea. I’m going to have to try that. I take the worst pictures.
How well does it stay open?
Looks like it turned out great.
Looking forward to hearing the comments about it when you Open Carry.
*Whistles*
She’s a beaut!
@Rob Robideau – Thank you Sir! (I’m available for interview…hinthintnudgenudge)
@Patrick – Thank you also!
@Tam – Check you e-mail…something there. Might have gotten spam-filtered on AOLs side?
@Bob S. – I too would like to know what comments Linoge gets from folks when he OC’s it…
@Bluesun – And thank you too!
Linoge – And my heartfelt thanks to you for being the guinea pig for this build…believe me, there were a couple moments I would sit and look at the build, and say to myself *what the ‘ell were you thinking when you said you could do this!?*. But then again, I’ve always been rather stubborn and hard-headed, and I don’t believe in impossibilities or no-win scenarios (h/t: James T. Kirk).
It was a pleasure to work with you, and an honor to make a new friendship. My Thanks, Sir.
That is fricking awesome! Beautiful gun and beautiful holster!
These sort of holsters are really not my cup of tea, but man, that’s some pretty nice workmanship.
Planned for use as an Open Carry holster? I know I’d go over and give the man with that gun in this holster a high-five.
Tam I’ll speak for my Flatjack that you can draw and re-holster all day using just one hand. Also retention is VERY good, it held my fully loaded Stainless 1911 completely inverted and even allowed some gentle shaking. Brisk shaking would drop the heavy gun free.

Tam – I put a 25lb weight on mine and it closed only a little. I didn’t put it in the review because I thought about it afterwards (and I couldn’t get a good picture).
I love my Flatjack.

@Rob Robideau – Dennis did an amazing job
.
@Patrick – I have found that one of the best way to improve any pictures is to add more light… either through a lens that can simply capture more light, or through having more lumens bouncing off your target. The important detail is to make the light diffuse (or numerous), though, otherwise you end up with awkward shadows.
@Tam – Not really fair to say yet, since I have not had a chance to fully break it in… However, I do believe this is about the largest gun, in all dimensions, that would be capable of being supported in this style of holster.
@Bob S. – Heh, maybe I will have something better than my standard, “I open carried. Nothing happened,” posts to write!
@bluesun – Came out darned well.
@Dragon – Well, hell, this should give you motivation to figure out a whole new holster model that will be able to support even larger firearms… and if you need someone to test it out…
Seriously, though, this thing turned out amazingly well, and once I take care of those things we discussed, I will be putting it through the wringer to see how it all turns out. Unfortunately, until I can sort out the SSR’s sights, “the wringer” may consist of nothing more than “around my house”, but we have to start somewhere
. Stand by for a full review in the future.
@Jason – They do match together rather well, do they not?
@ZK – Definitely planning on open carrying with it… My stingray holster gets the occasional glance as it is, but this thing is a definite eye-catcher
