app hunting

So now that I have a non-dumb-phone, what applications should I be on the lookout for?

Seems like a machine that is literally more powerful than the first computer I took to college should have some interesting capabilities, given that it fits in my pocket, connects to the cortex wherever it might be, and all that…

Crucial: Advanced Task Killer, MotoTorch, Where’s My Droid.

    Games: Angry Birds, Wordfeud.

    Goofy: Inception Button.

Useful: Barcode Scanner, Google Goggles, Pandora, Shopper, Skype.

Careful, Angry Birds can steal your life away. Advanced Task Killer is a must have. I use Meecal’s RSS reader to keep up with the “Walls”. Weather Bug, Tapatalk, Launcher Pro and Handcent SMS are a few of my other regular apps I use on my Droid.

  • I agree on task killer. Get a calculator ap (there are a bout a zillion, try them until you find one that works for you) Ultrachron is a timer/stopwatch ap that is handy (put it on the third or fourth page) Weather bug is a handy ap with forecasts by the hour and a decent map/weather radar. Battery doctor is a good ap until you learn how your usage affects your battery. of course the yahoo ap is a good one. I also recommend a clock ap (again there are a bunch so download and try until you find one you like. Urbanspoon is a neat ap for finding restaurants if you eat out a lot.

Color notes is a handy ap and if you build things/fix things, the level ap is handdy when you need one for quick work.

How is the phone after “rooting”? I haven’t done that yet to mine.

  • I agree on all the above and I would toss in Lookout which is a slick data back/recovery tool as well as a lost phone locator and the FXCamera is a lot of fun too.

  • Most people are saying that Task Killer is unnecessary because the OS does a fine job of shutting items down when needed. After two months of using it, I took it off my phone because I agreed. I saw no benefit. It got in the way more than anything.

If you have bandwidth restriction, 3G Watchdog.
aCar for car mileage and maintenance, etc
    Astro
    Barcode Scanner
    BatteryTime
Calculator Beta (my favorite so far)
    CardioTrainer
    ConvertPad
    Dropbox
    Evernote
    Fandango
Handcent SMS (I bought the advanced)
Package Buddy (awesome brown truck tracker)
    Pandora
SDCardWifi (to easily take files off through a browser on my computer)
    SQUARE
    Timeriffic
    Tip Calc (cuz I’m lazy)
Twidroyd (I got pro because I liked it that much)
WaveSecure (You have to buy it but check it out)
Wordpress (for blogging on the run)
    Yelp

I can’t tell you how many I removed because I didn’t have memory on my Aria. Google Skymap is neat as hell.

  • Don’t forget nethack! Also Cat Piano and FartDroid…you don’t have to TELL anybody you downloaded them, but best you do it. :)

  • WiFi Analyzer is a fun app. Also Key Ring, RingDroid, the USAA app, a voice recorder, GPS Status, and LogCat live wallpaper. There’s also a cool app called gstrings which is an instrument tuner. NESoid and its family of video game emulators are also cool.

  • Thanks, everyone, for the suggestions! I have not had a chance to dig through them all right now, but I have to admit – ATK and JuiceDefender are my new favorite apps, if only because the latter turns off the phone’s data connection when the screen is off. Sure, it means pushes to the phone are going to be a little delayed, but at least it makes the somewhat smaller battery in the Incredible last a little longer than it would have otherwise.

Speaking of, does anyone know of any good, free alternatives to Location?

And, holy crap, Goggles and Shopper might just be the coolest things ever.

Location is the app that turns off various things depending on where you are, iirc. I don’t have an app that does that but Timeriffic turns a multitude of things off or down depending on the time of day and you can create different times, etc. So during the week when I’m at work, I have it turn off stuff at such and such hour and turn back on at such and such. It is free.

I went ahead and got the bigger battery for my Incredible – Very happy.

  • @Patrick – Actually, I figured out that the free version of Juice Defender has some of the same functionalities, as does FoxyRing… Put together, or even used separately, they both help with the battery life, especially since JD turns off the phone’s data connection if the screen is locked, which is just awesome if you ask me.

@GuardDuck – The bigger-and-same-geometry, or the bigger-and-bigger? Fortunately or unfortunately, I already have, and need, a Seidio Rugged case, which makes the phone incompatible with the physically larger batteries… but I definitely see the draw of one with a larger capacity in general!
