I found out this morning that noted Kleagle, Exalted Cyclops, and Democratic Senator Robert Byrd died earlier today. As I mentioned to Better Half, this ranks slightly lower on my “Give-a-Gos-Se Meter” than a noted drunkard, womanizer, and reckless driver who also happened to occupy a seat in the Senate kicking the bucket. If anyone is offended by this position, I need only point you to Robert’s own words:
I shall never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by my side… Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds.
— Robert C. Byrd, in a letter to Sen. Theodore Bilbo (D-MS), 1944
Lest you think the above comment was simply the product of a young man who may or may not have necessarily known better, Robert Byrd opposed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, he opposed the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and has a history of voting against and otherwise opposing every single black nominee or appointee he had a say on, throughout his entire congressional career.
Even worse, not only was Robert Byrd noted for being the “King of Pork”, he proudly embraced the title, and “enjoyed”, by his own words, generating as many pork-barrel projects as possible.
Should Senator Byrd be remembered? Absolutely – as an shining example of what not to do. However, as sure as I am that he and Teddy are bumping knuckles today, I am just as certain that the Democratic Party and Mainstream Media (but I repeat myself) are doing their absolute damnest to ensure that Robert’s disgusting legacy is celebrated… which kind of says something about those folks with the “D” after their names, does it not?

The man who made sure the 24th Amendment was passed was a Democrat– Spessard Holland. My grandfather made “got out the vote”– LEGALLY, no less– and made sure Holland went to the Senate. In return, Spessard Holland is almost unknown.
Want to bet that Byrd gets YET ANOTHER project named after him?

‘Tis true – there were definitely Democrats of value throughout history, just as there were Republicans who were complete and utter dirtbags.
This particular individual, though, had little to no redeeming value whatsoever, and people are falling over themselves to elevate him to sainthood. Just not seein’ it.
