random trivia

To an average person, a ship name of HMS Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy is just an administrative hiccup that can be cured with a few applications of the “Backspace” key, and a momentary glimmer of something approximating imagination.

For those of us who have plied the briny depths, though, we fully understand the captain’s… predicament.

    Captain’s worried about spiders?

    I read this and when…wwhhaaaaatt?!?!?!?
Then I got my semi-weekly dose of Vexxarr…

It all became…clearer, no, less murky. Come on, a little background would help.

  • @guy – That, or his ship ending up looking like a psychedelic double-decker.

@Wildman7316 – Hey, I linked to that exact comic – what more do you want? :)

  • There was a boat in the Portland Fishing fleet. Fleet owner decided to rename it to match the fleet (Mother’s name #x) Well one of the boats in the series was pretty famous as she started to founder in a bad storm, and rather than tow her into port to be salvaged the coast guard used her for target practice with the deck gun. So happened that the huge cash settlement for destruction of property was used to re-fit his fleet. Part of the money he named a new boat that he had bought into the series….with the number of the sunken ship, and painted the bastard blue!

Now I shipped out on this boat a few times under its old moniker and it was not only a comfortable boat but VERY nice all around….still I’m glad I was never asked to ship out on her after the name change.

Saw her refitted for the first time off of Georges banks while underway and when I read the name on the mast I thought I’d seen a ghost!

  • Ok, so renaming an already-christened ship is bad enough… but renaming one after another boat that foundered, and then got used as target practice? Yeah, that is just asking for Poseidon to reach up and kick your hairy ass.

Kind of surprising that a fisherman would do that kind of thing, really.

  • Yep, AND it was BLUE! Can’t do that. Blue is the sea’s color, and the sea takes what belongs to it!

  • Well, I guess if you are going to ignore one superstition, you might as well go all-out. Sure as hell never set foot on that boat myself…

  • Kind of surprising that a fisherman would do that kind of thing, really.

    Was his first name Dan?

  • Yup, you lost me there :) .
