I was going to write up a post fisking this latest example of bigoted, intolerant, anti-rights ignorance from Southern Beale (including all of her following comments, wherein she simply doubles-down on her previous idiocy, and engages in some hellacious goalpost-moving), but, really, a comment from one of her regular readers made me giggle so much I simply had to address it. Said comment begins:
The Ben Goeser tragedy is just another reason not to manufacture and sell handguns. We should be making it harder to kill people, not easier.
“Flying Junior”, the author of the quoted words, goes on and on for more than a few sentences after those, in much the same “ZOMG, gunz is TEH EBIL!” vein, but I simply could not get past those two proclamations.
Apparently the individual writing the above comment is unfamiliar with reality: unskilled and uneducated craftsmen, using nothing but basic tools and their own ingenuity, working out of dilapidated shacks and dirt huts, make thousands of functional firearms a day outside of the law and under the radar.
For that matter, prisoners – people forcibly separated from society, in a confined, controlled location wherein weapons are completely and strictly verboten – are quite fond of using their own imaginations and creativity to make surprisingly functional and quite deadly firearms themselves.
The simple truth is that any basic automotive shop is completely capable of cranking out crude, but completely functional, firearms at a prodigious rate. Any average homeowner’s garage probably has the right tools and equipment to make a rudimentary firearm capable of killing at least one person from a distance. Would I, personally, want to use any of this kind of equipment? Not if I had any choice in the matter.
But those dangerous-at-both-ends contraptions bring “Flying Junior”‘s world crashing down around his ears. The “handgun” djinn is out of his bottle. No amount of wishing, hoping, dreaming, or desiring will stuff him back in. The firearm, in all of its shapes, sizes, and configurations, is part of our cultural history and knowledge, and the only way to ensure it is never made again, anywhere, is to simply exterminate the human race (which has always intrigued me as a possible end-game for some folks…). So your options basically boil down to stuffing your head in the sand and ignoring reality, attempting to force reality to abide by your wishes while it continues to go and do whatever it is that it wants to do, or accepting reality for what it is and compensating accordingly. It would seem as though anti-rights advocates seem to bounce back and forth between the first and second options, even though the latter has them blatantly aiding and abetting criminals, who, as the above videos show, will get firearms even if they have to make them by hand. What, then, is the point and purpose of disarming the law-abiding, especially since it is already illegal for the vast majority of criminals to possess firearms?
*sigh* And as if the blatant ignorance of reality displayed by “Flying Junior” was not enough, there is absolutely no causation or correlation between increasing numbers of firearms and firearm-related deaths. Why is it that the people who most adamantly think that beliefs trump facts are also typically the most vocal about “there aught to be a law”?

So wait… let me get this straight. You are saying that criminals will always and forever have access to guns… and because of that… law-abiding citizens should as well so that they may defend their lives and those of their family?? Hmmm sounds reasonable, so what’s the problem?
/snark
Its a wonder she’s slowly turning into MikeB302000.
I still suspect there is a cloning facility beneath the Joyce Foundation building in Chicago that’s cranking these people out of vats.
What got me was the absolute disparity in treatment between the car — which was used to nearly kill someone– and the firearm which was brandished.
Hey, if you don’t know enough to not pull a gun on a guy you nearly ran over in a crosswalk then maybe you shouldn’t have one.
Let’s not worry about giving people with mental problems or anger management issues licenses to drive 2 ton vehicles.
Nope, they want to put everyone through some magical sorting machine that predicts behavior months and years down the line — don’t worry about those pesky rights people have –they want to feel safe.
I also love who they take the word of the chef as the unvarnished truth. No questions about whether or not he endangered the driver’s life walking out in front of the car. No questions about the words exchanged nor if the chef could have said anything threatening…..nope, let’s not do anything that might cast non-gun owners in a bad light.
Maybe there’s a soylent green factory somewhere that’s pumping out folks like MikeB, Donviti, SoBeale etc.?
I’ll be pulling a little something she said in her comments as well. That kind out proud, outright bigotry is too good (in the most despicable, vile sense) not to shine a light on.
Looks like she’s heavily moderating comments. I’m SHOCKED I tell ya! Shocked!
[...] Some good stuff here. Anti’s generally have no clue what the heck they are talking [...]
You know what’s really sad? She’s citing an incident where some random asshole pulled a gun on someone in order to call for a ban on both lawful OC and CCW. Furthermore, she uses it to explain why we should be disarmed in “bars.” That’s one of the saddest excuses for an “argument” I’ve ever seen. Hell, the article says NOTHING about the asshole driver who pulled a gun and then drove off. I’d put money on him not having a CCW permit.
[...] So Linoge put up a post on Southern Beale’s Bigotry [...]
@Patrick – I would venture to say that the problem is the word “reasonable” – if there is one adjective that could be used to describe the vast majority of the arguments put forward by anti-rights nuts, that would not be it, leading one to believe that anti-rights nuts, by and large, are not particularly reasonable individuals.
But I do get the feeling that they and flat-earthers would get along just fine.
@Weer’d Beard – Really, the only thing that has differentiated her from Sparky is that she does not appear to be writing anti-rights posts just for the sake of attention-whoring. Same “reasoned discourse”, same allowing insults against those who disagree with her but not against her or her fans, same irrational arguments, same lack of a coherent logic stream, same use of anecdotes as bases for stereotyping judgements regarding an entire population, same self-induced bigotry…
There may not be a cloning vat for anti-rights nuts, but there surely is for anti-rights talking points.
@Bob S. – Like I said, her original post was about as full of idiotic nonsense as you could possibly get, and would have provided the seed for a very nice, long fisking… if I had not been distracted by the moronic response from one of her commenters.
My friends and I did the math on the destructive capabilities of a car’s tank of gasoline while we were in high school… granted, the numbers required aerosolizing the fuel in order to more-or-less guarantee instantaneous combustion of the entire volume, but the numbers were mind-boggling, and the results could easily kill and injure far more people than a firearm could… even one with a “high-capacity” magazine. And that is all without even considering the “blunt-force instrument” applications of an automobile, especially against crowds or property.
But you are absolutely right – she fixated, laser-like, on the firearm, and completely disregarded the possible damages that could be inflicted by an angry person behind the wheel. Hell, the person would not have even had to step out of his car to kill the pedestrian. But, no, guns are evil, guns are the cause of all of this, and guns have to go away.
*sigh* As I have said before, churches would kill (and have done so in the past) for single-minded devotion of that caliber…
@mike w. – Knock yourself out – there is certainly more than enough content in the comments alone to go around. If I am not mistaken, though, she announced a while back that she was going to be permanently “moderating” (i.e. deleting) comments from certain folks (namely, you an Weer’d), regardless of content or relevance. Gotta protect that echo chamber, after all. Why do you think I did not bother leaving this post as a comment over there?
It’s getting even better. Now she has stated that she opposed the Terrorist Watch list when Bush put it into play, yet just a comment or two before she stated that the NRA wants to allow terrorists to have guns by being against the watch list. THAT is the definition of irony. I called her on it and I hope she doesn’t publish it because I can blog about it tomorrow.
Y’know, she didn’t allow a single one of my comments, yet you guys managed to coax her into making a complete fool of herself. Great Job guys.
@Patrick – Hell, even if she does allow your comment to go through, you should post about it. As Mike says, bigotry of this magnitude and nature should be exposed at any and all available opportunities.
Hell, even her “*crickets*” claim is completely ludicrous, and flies in the face of the facts – I have posts dating back to February of 2009 opposing the “no fly list”, and have personally opposed it since its inception. But those facts negate her point and disrupt her worldview, and thus they do not exist.
Bigotry, pure and simple.
@mike w. – Really, it does not take a whole lot of effort. Check out her post wherein she talks about Our Glorious President “wresting” $20,000,000,000 from BP – I asked her what authority he had to do such a thing, and she went off on a completely irrelevant “ZOMG, Rightwingers R teh SUX0RZ!” No coherent answer to be seen, just unbridled, irrational hatred. With buttons that easy to push, getting her to make an ass out of herself is not difficult.
In other news, she apparently wants a dictator for a President – no great surprise there.
She posted it… LOL. And you’re right Linoge. I should post about it.
With buttons that easy to push, getting her to make an ass out of herself is not difficult.
Ever get the feeling that her and her hubby were meant for each other.
Different bigot, Dixie. Same state, same ethos, I believe same career. Different hubbies. As far as I know Mr. Beale has never had anything outspoken to say on the net.
@Patrick – Might as well
. Blogfodder is blogfodder.
@Weer’d Beard – True enough. SoBeal and Southern Female Lawyer are two different people, and I have never seen much, if any, information concerning SoBeale’s other half. That said, they are fans of one another, and hold to much the same beliefs, so I understand the confusion.
