One of the favorite arguments used by anti-rights quislings against law-abiding citizens carrying firearms is that criminals, by and large, tend to have the element of surprise on their side, and if they are already pointing a gun at you, trying to draw your own gun is only going to result in you getting shot. It is tempting to treat this proclamation as “common sense” and take it at face value, however, doing so would be indulging yourself in a complete fallacy, as this incident in Nebraska shows:

Yes, it is possible that a criminal with a firearm pointed at you will shoot you before you are able to draw your own firearm and shoot him – in fact, it is relatively probable. However, treating that possibility as an undeniable, unavoidable fact is simply wrong – in this incident, the permitted handgun carrier (a certain Harry J. McCullough III and undeniable hero) had a bleeding shotgun pointed at him, and yet he was able to put multiple hits on target and a violent criminal in the ground.

Was the shotgun (a “short” one – any bets on whether or not it was legally so?) unloaded? Did the criminal lose his nerve? Was he distracted? We will probably never know the specifics, but one thing is for certain: the theory that a firearm already being pointed at you trumps a firearm on your him is now quite false (remember: if a theory is false once, no matter how many times it is true, the theory as a whole is false). And, personally, I would rather have the opportunity to try and defend myself, even if it means I still might die, as opposed to wholly and entirely leaving my life in the hands of someone who has shown a marked lack of respect for anyone else.
