more distracting nonsense

I have been up to a few random things around the webpage recently, and I thought I would take a moment to document them all (ater all, this is my webpage, so I can do those kinds of things).

First, I would again remind my readers that my new RSS feed links are “http://www.wallsofthecity.net/feed/” and “http://www.wallsofthecity.net/feed/atom/“. Yes, the old links do still work, and should continue to work for the forseeable future, but I make no guarantees about that, and updating your links takes all of a second or two.

Second, while I thoroughly despise how pervasive and invasive “social media” has become in our online culture (big surprise there, what with me being the gregarious type and all…), I also recognize its utility, so I have added a couple different things to try and capitalize on the situation. First, there is the Sociable plugin that puts those cute little icons after the “send it downrange:” section of every post. I picked out the social media sources I find to be the most useful/interesting, but if I missed any, let me know. Likewise, if you do not want those little icons showing up in the RSS feed any more, let me know – I am not so sure about the idea myself. Second, I added an implemention of Topsy Retweet Button, in case you wanted to see my weblog posts in more places on Twitter than just my own Twitter feed (a feed that does nothing more than link back to my posts here – did I mention that I log into Facebook about once a month?). Speaking of those two plugins, though, I am having a devil of a time getting their [div] areas to line up. I have tried “display:inline” for all of the various appropriate tags, and that does not seem to be making a difference, so I am coming up at a loss (and, yes, I know [span] tags are the “right” way to do this, but that requries hacking the plugins’ code, and I am still feeling my way around PHP). Third and finally, that cute little floaty button off to the right is provided by WP FollowMe, and points to the aforementioned @wotc_linoge Twitter stream. Does anyone know why I have to define a pixel distance for the [div] property “right:” in order to keep it from hiding behind the scroll bar?

Third, after finally reading the instructions for the engine driving this webpage’s theme, Atahualpa, I have finally figured out how to keep it from barfing up the entire contents of the CSS file at the top of every dynamically-generated HTML page. Hopefully that will decrease load times by a few hundredths of a second or something.

Fourth, note to self: “related posts” plugins that use one’s entire post content as their contextual comparison baselines do not work. Or, rather, they do work, inasmuch as “every page takes 30-60 seconds to load” is equivalent to “works”. I guess this is what I get for refusing to use “Tags”.

Finally, I am still curious hwo to get that nifty “Comments: #” image at the bottom of my RSS feeds – it seems standard for weblogs directly hosted on WordPress’ servers/domains, but for us freelancer types, the option is not even available (unless I just completely missed it).

As always, I am open to suggestions.
