quote of the day

I could hardly say it better myself:

In face of all this hard data, the antis’ theme has become “commonsense gun control.” That, I think, is more than just “we only want a moderate amount of gun control.” I think it also has a nuance of “don’t expect us to cite hard data, just back whatever sounds like a good idea.” Gun shows are “a loophole” that must be closed — don’t ask whether they’re a source of criminal guns. Liberalized CCW is a terrible idea, will lead to street massacres — don’t expect us to show that it has ever had that result. Etc. “Commonsense gun control” thus equates to “we lost the battles over the hard data, and don’t want to talk about them.”

(Emphasis added.)
Given the number “women with the earrings“, folks who cannot differentiate fact from fiction and have no method for doing so, and people who cannot even do simple math I alone have encountered from the anti-rights camp (sadly, not just the people illustrated in the examples above), Mr. Hardy’s interpretation of their ceaseless mantra seems spot on.
As always, debates would be so much easier, less antagonistic, and more quickly resolved if people would just stop lying and start being honest about their motives, goals, and methods…

Heh. Honesty isn’t going to help them attain their goals. I can’t say that I blame them. If they were completely honest they would be dead in the water. What they want is unconstitutional, and that is the nicest thing I can say about it.

  • Honesty? With honesty you can’t bleat about “guns in bars in Tennessee”, or “deadly Mac 10 Machine gun capable of thousands of rounds per minute” http://www.nydailynews.com/news/ny_crime/2009/12/10/2009-12-10_the_mac10_the_gun_used_in_time_square_shooting.html or “racists with assault rifles at Obama protests”, or blood in the streets, or…

  • Years ago, when “reasonable” or “commonsense”gun control was a popular demand from the anti’s, I would always ask a proponent of that to name a commonsense gun control they are proposing.
Every single time I was able to shoot down their dream restriction by explaining why it was unreasonable or made no sense at all.
The results were not unexpected. They stopped talking to me, generally.

  • Dave: Oh, I was not saying that honesty on the anti-rights advocates’ part would actually help them win arguments, only that it would more-quickly resolve the arguments – once they admitted that they simply want to exert more control over their fellow American citizen, the argument itself becomes somewhat moot, after all, like you imply/state :) .
Sevesteen: Oh, to be sure, lying through your teeth and following a pre-programmed script certainly makes life easier for the anti-rights advocates of the world… apart from them having their arses handed to them at every available opportunity…
Ride Fast: Somehow, it does not tremendously surprise me that the tactics of those looking to strip us of our rights have not changed significantly over the years…
