To provide something of a counterpoint for my previous post, I openly carried my Walther PPS in its new rig twice this past week at the Trader Joe’s in Midtown, Atlanta, GA – possibly a more-trendy/hip/yuppy store in possibly a more-trendy/hip/yuppy neighborhood than the main Bliss Home store I open carried at recently. The first time we spent about 20 minutes in the store, and the second time we spent about 45 minutes. End result? Nothing.
Not a gorramed thing.
No reaction from the security guard at the entrance. No reaction from the market employees. And little to no reaction from the patrons, aside from occasional glances. No frantic “man with a gun” phone calls, no police, no asking me to leave, not a bloody thing. Of course, it probably helped that I was simply going about my business, shopping for the things we can only easily and cheaply procure at those stores, and not making a huge scene or deal about it, but a fat lot of nothing is still a fat lot of nothing.
If you listen to hoplophobes, anti-rights advocates, and even some firearm owners, me openly carrying a firearm should have resulted in cries of “Women and children first!” as people headed for the fire exits and flooded 911 with “man with a gun” calls. In reality? Not so much.
Of course, Better Half and I could not help but to hypothesize on how such a 911 call should go (obviously I am not a 911 operator, so this is purely a parody)…

911 Operator: 911. What is the nature of your emergency?
Gun-Fearing Wussy: I’m at Trader Joe’s in Midtown and there’s a man with a gun here!
911: Has he shot anyone?
GFW: No, not yet, but he’s carrying the gun around with him!
911: Carrying it around? In his hands?
GFW: Well, no, it’s in a holster… but he has a gun!
911: The gun is currently in a holster. Has he pointed it at anyone?
GFW: Of course not – I said it’s in a holster! But he has a gun!
911: Yes. You mentioned that. He has kept his gun in its holster, and not threatened anyone with it?
GFW: Well, I feel threatened!
911: Fine, but he has not pointed the firearm at you?
GFW: No, but…
911: Sir, are you aware that it is legal to carry a handgun, openly or concealed, in Georgia with the appropriate permit?
GFW: Wait, what are you…
911: Furthermore, are you aware that 911 is to be used in emergency situations only?
GFW: But this is an…
911: Additionally, are you aware that a person simply carrying a handgun, in a holster, without pointing it at anyone or threatening anyone with it, is not an emergency?
GFW: Now you wait just a…
911: Furthermore, are you aware that if you continue this phone call, I can forward it to my superiors for potential financial or criminal charges?
GFW: But there is a man with a GUN!!
911: Thank you sir. Your phone number has been recorded along with this conversation. Have a good day. *click*
