$10,000,000 well-invested

Now that I have finally seen the movie, and now that WizardPC figured it out, I can say, “Yes, yes I did.”

Oh, and as for its serial number? Well, that is going to have to wait for another day, as is the explanation for this post’s title (but no, that is not what I paid for it)…

  • Beautiful car. Still I demand some interior shots, as well as a peek at the powerplant!
Oh if I lived in your climate I would so very much love a RWD car (Tho somthing more the speed of the Pontiac G8….or anything else that resembles the Current Aussie Incarnation of the Ford Falcon (essentialy your ‘Stang with 4-doors and a more managable back-seat…oh and they sell it with an inline 6 that displaces 4.0L and cranks close to 300 ft/lbs of torque! The 5.4L is beefy and nice, but I might opt for the smaller twist-mill for commuting)
Blah Blah Blah, they don’t make a decent RWD stick-shift sedan for this market, and it doesn’t matter as the first time Al Gore dumps 3′ of love on us I’ll be stuck at home until the plows do their work…or sucking on the steering wheel with a light pole kissing the firewall…
It’s the Truck for now, and an SUV for when Weer’dlings enter the picture.

So make your own. A used Lexus IS300 or GS300 with a 2JZ-GTE swap should smoke most sedans on the market today, even without ditching the twins or doing any serious modifications to the motor. Even a 1JZ-GTE should work, though folks might tease you for having a 2.5L inline 6 in the car.
The Lexus V8′s also work quite well for forced induction.

  • Hsoi: Thank ye, sir.
Weer’d: I will see what I can do over the next few days. This one’s interior is a little different than most Bullitts, not because I have done anything to it, but rather because of its special serial. More later, though.
And, honestly, I do not even require RWD for my performance cars, and honestly would have been happier with an AWD variant… but “AWD” and “muscle car”, for some reason, simply do not go together yet. Every decent AWB speedster I could afford is pretty much a spun up ricer or tricked-out econobox (even those straight from the factory), so that pretty much ruled that out. Hell, I would have loved four doors too, but even those look like glorified soccer transports.
And you have to hear the exhaust on this thing…
But, yeah, I am not exactly looking forward to continuous temperatures below freezing (yes, it does happen down here ;) ), but at least it has built-in traction control (that I have not yet had the nerve to turn off….).
Mike W.: Unfortunately, I am definitely a COTS kind of person – I will do little things, like exhausts, and intakes, and whatnot… but when it comes to full-on engine replacements? Yeah, I wuss out. Those things must tear it up, though…

  • AWD? Ick! Makes your drivetrain more complicated (and therefore adds failure points) heavier, and it takes more control of the wheels away from you and gives them to the computer. All well and good for making SWEET launches, but it’ll hurt you in the corners (double if you try to make it slide)
MikeW, Heh the thought crossed my mind. Tho if I was going to build a car it would be a Fiero to a Ferrari 308 to profess to the world that Thomas Magnum is my real Father. Or I’d attempt to have an Ariel Atom clone of some sort for my own micro minimalist supercar.

  • Eh, I was spoiled by a Subaru Outback, my first real car. Thing handled like a gorramed go-cart, and only failed me once when all four wheels found ice simultaneously. After test-driving a WRX, I realized just how wickedly-addictive the Subaru line was, and was immediately thankful that I was not likely to be ever able to really afford to delve completely into that particular black hole…

  • Awesome car! Nice pictures too, are they HDR shots? The first 2 definitely look like HDR

  • Thanks! Yup, all three of them are – good eye! I got kind of hooked on the idea, and really like how it works with night shots. The original *.jpgs that were taken in parallel with those pictures’ root *.raw files were pretty darned useless, but after a little tinkering, those HDRs came out quite well, in my opinion (especially the second one, with the hood reflection).

  • Any plans for the Stang or are you keeping it stock?
The nice thing about AWD is how forgiving it is. I’ve driven a WRX (without the crap Bridgestone RE92′s on it) and the harder you go in the corners the more it shines. I would have gone with an MS6 instead of my 6i if not for insurance.
I may just be biased against RWD because I started with a twitchy, unforgiving MR car. A stock Stang should be pretty biased towards understeer in the corners provided you’re not stupid with your right foot. With a light MR setup there’s a really fine line between being fine and being unable to get the rearend back to straight.
Of course that’s the reason they don’t advise mid-engine RWD cars for overzealous 16 year olds :)

  • Given that the Bullitts left the factory pre-modified (cold air intake (adding about 15hp, supposedly), Ford Racing suspension, Bullitt exhaust, a better programming tune, etc.), I am probably going to leave it stock for a little while, and I am not likely to ever change the exhaust (part of the reason I bought it). I would like to do the nod to the original version of the car, though, and install some quarter window louvers – I am still disappointed Ford did not make those standard on the new incarnation, given its obviously fast-back design.
Unless you do something completely whacky-assed with AWD (like hit a patch of ice larger than your car), it will pretty much let you get away with murder. But, then again, given that the Subaru’s heritage goes back to rally racing, it is no small wonder. I am still quite pissed that even the new MS3 does not have it… Did see an awesome slideshow of a guy yoinking an Audi’s AWD system and somehow stuffing it in a Mazda3… Stupidly expensive, and Lord alone knows how well it worked, but it seemed doable.
And, yeah, I can profess that after swinging the Bullitt through an accelerating turn this afternoon, the aft end decides where the car goes. The good news is that letting off the gas tends to solve whatever problem you might have. The bad news is that is not reflexive for some people, and that is still no guarantee.
Me, I think my starter car of a 1986 Honda Accord is perfect for 16-year-olds ;) .

So where did that $10,000,000 figure come from? Well, if you go back and watch the chase scene from Bullitt (an honestly unimpressive movie, but a fantastic chase), you will notice that Frank’s Mustang had a unique exhaust note -…

  • for the sake of others

This should not be difficult for most of my readers, but I would strongly suggest against anyone dealing with Biggers Mazda in Elgin, Illinois. In the interests of disclosure, that is where my particular Bullitt came from, so I am…
