I will be perfectly honest – news like this makes me want to use remarkably colorful language to describe how I feel about it. Instead, I will simply state that I will not do business, ever, with any organization, company, corporation, or group which contacts me on the basis of my having a handgun carry permit, and if I am doing business with them presently, it will be terminated as soon as I receive the correspondence. Those entities are, however, quite likely to receive a very polite letter from me expressing just how I feel about their handling of my privacy.
Likewise, state politicians should bloody well unscrew themselves, stop facilitating this nonsense, and seal off these records next year. Internally open for audit and verification is one thing, but publicly open for any rapist or abusive ex-husband to look up old flames is something else entirely.
That database is one of the most unethical as well as dangerous things I’ve seen.
I’m amazed I haven’t heard of a criminal racket that’s using the list as a “Shopping List” for scores.
Well, not to be all conspiratorial or anything, but bear in mind that the database was put together by one of the largest and oldest newspapers in Western TN, and has been supported (or at least condoned-by-silence) by the majority of news outlets here in the state…
