Special effects were great, but how in the world can a viewer suspend disbelief when the main characters "just barely make it out alive" in almost every scene. Rife with cliches and as you stated, bogus science, this turned into a laugh out loud comedy for me. Spent 30 minutes outside the theater afterward discussing story issues with my friend, and laughing most of that time.
