So, my TiVo subscription comes due next month, and we are still gimping along on a standard-definition 80-hour (at minimal quality) TiVo unit… Our options are to re-up and keep the same unit (seems kind of dumb, given the prevalence of HD broadcasting, and the fact that we are eventually going to move up to it), re-up and get a brand-spanking-new TiVo HD box, or take the money that the new box and subscription would cost and build a PC-based media center.
What say/think ye?
Of course, our hand may be forced by the fact that there appears to be only one option for watching encrypted HD channels on a PC
, and that it costs almost $250, and that it may not work with all PCs… Series 3 TiVos support the idiotic CableCARDs natively.

I have the HD Tivo and like it well enough. I just wish I had more room on it. I’m still looking into getting additional storage but the approved device I think is still over-priced for the amount of storage.
Oh I should mention that I only use it for over-the-air broadcasts as we have DirecTv and have a separate DVR for that.
Yeah, the only HD TiVo I would get is the mega-mongo-sized one, simply due to the outright stupid prices of its accessories – the wireless router fo the TiVos was the same way, though I still purchased it.
We may end up going the satellite route anywise, depending on Comcast, but my parents have had mixed luck with dish companies’ native DVRs…
If you have a series 1 or series 2 TiVO and have had the service for over a year, they will give you a discounted price on an HD or HD XL.
Noticed that… Seemed about $50 off their HD or HD XL lines, which is not much, but at least it is something, I suppose. The CableCARD thing seems to be forcing our hand that direction, assuming we ever get interested in encrypted, broadcast HD.
