A common meme among the anti-rights advocates of the internet is that women do not use or purchase firearms, and some even go so far as to say that firearms are detrimental to females in general (who knew that the mere existence of an inanimate lump of metal was enough to harm someone?). As is usual for made-up fallacies, the facts tend to indicate otherwise:
Local gun shop owners say they’re seeing an increase in the number of women shoppers right now. The reasons, they say, are many, including the downturn in the economy and violence on the street.
According to the National Shooting Sports Foundation, about 48 percent of people taking their first handgun seminars this year happen to be women. CBS 2′s Pamela Jones reports on the growing trend.
Almost half of the people expressing new interest in procuring their first handguns are women. Remnd me again how a female would never buy a firearm?
Not only did she shop for a new weapon, but she also wanted to find out about taking firearms training from the pros.
“It’s better that you know how to use it,” Santiago said. “You know, take the class, take the course, protect yourself.”
Good for her. A firearm without the training and knowledge of how to use it is nothing more than a talisman, and a poor one at that. Range time, training time, and practice of all sorts are pretty much required for safe and effective use of firearms in self-defense situations.
And she’s not alone. A National Shooting Sports Foundation survey found that the top two reasons women seek firearms training are for personal protection and target practice.
At Illinois Gun Works, the owners say they’ve seen a 40 percent increase recently in the numbers of women looking to take classes, and that the number of women coming in to purchase guns is rising, too.
Let me just keep repeating that point: more women are getting interested in firearms, more women are purchasing firearms, and more women are learning how to use their firearms.
Armed women who are interested and adequately trained in protecting themselves and their families can only be viewed as Very Good Things (TM), and something we gunnies in general should do whatever we can to encourage, facilitate, and assist – as with all people going down the same path.
