questions and answers

Reading assignment: Caleb answers some questions concerning his recent defensive coffee/gun use. Trust me, it is worth your time.
One important take-away that keeps coming up, again and again, is simply this: if you have decided to carry a firearm, carry what you can, but carry. The simple act of defiance and fighting back might have been sufficient to discourage Caleb’s aggressor, but the sight of a firearm definitely was. We gunnies have a tendency to disparage any caliber that does not start with at least a “3″ (or even a “4″ sometimes), but the fact of the matter is that people simply do not like to get shot, and most criminals will not take the time to determine exactly what you are pointing at them before they continue or break off their attack. A .22 Short in your pocket will always be more effective than a .500WE at home, and if that little .22 is more likely to be carried, then carry it.
A pocket pistol appropriately carried is a lighter burden than regret.

  • I’m still glad a good guy like you is packing a snubbie 9 rather than a snubbie .25, and I hope Caleb rethinks that choice. Your life is worth bringing at least a LITTLE more gun IMHO.

  • Well, much though we like to ridicule those calibers of smaller girth, the fact is that it was effective in this particular case. Sure, no shot was fired, and sure, it really is a pissant of a round, but it kept Caleb alive, and that is all that really matters.
Sure, as an engineer, I firmly believe in the conservation of momentum and that bigger holes yield more damage, but if a stupid idea works, it is not so stupid ;) .
