And in a repeat of yesterday’s performance, Murdoc points to a relatively interesting article concering the pants-wetting hysterics some people undergo when confronted with the reality that firearms really do exist, and are legally used, on a daily basis, by law-abiding citizens just like them. Given that this seemed to be taking place in my back yard, I took a gander, and one quote in particular stuck out in the news report:
Later that day, Nielsen said the resident contacted Nash County Manager Bob Murphy to express her discomfort with the advertisement. Within a few minutes of the complaint, Nielsen said Murphy and Assistant County Manager Wayne Moore appeared at his shop, asking him to cooperate and remove the posters – but Nielson refused.
Murphy told Nielsen a resident was bothered by the idea of a woman brandishing a gun.
A thought that has been bouncing around the gunblogosphere of late is that people who do not respect the Second Amendment also do not, and, in fact, cannnot, respect the rest of the Bill of Rights or Constitution. I can think of no better example than this – a woman was “uncomfortable” with pictures of firearms at a firearm store, so what is the logical end result? Why, we should ignore the owner’s rights protected by the First Amendment, as well.
Hell, I will be honest – I am kind of uncomfortable with the pictures as well. The news report’s photographs of the pictures are of poor quality and small size, but it seems to me that both of them have individuals with their fingers on the triggers of the firearms in question. Even in photography, the four rules still apply.
But let us be honest here, for a second – gun stores are not porn stores (at least not by the commonly-accepted definition of “porn”), and you cannot honestly expect them to blackout their windows simply because you get your panties in a wad at the sight of a legally-possesed firearm. Companies advertise, and sex-based advertisements tend to sell better than puritanical ones… or have you had your head firmly planted in the sand for the past 20 years (we already know it is up your ass, so do not worry about that point)? Considering the kinds of things you can see walking around an average American mall (*cough*victoriassecret*cough* *cough*fredericks*cough*), those pictures were positively tame. I certainly do not agree with the objectification of women, but it is not like gun shops are the only culprits, nor are they the only ones profiting from it.
The county has assuredly followed the prudent course of action by dropping the matter entirely, especially considering that the gun store owner in question (a certain Mr. Dennis Nielsen) has taken it to court once already, and probably would have no compunctions about doing so again. Sometimes, rights do win out, despite people’s best efforts to be completely idiotic morons.

I think the lady would complain no matter what pictures were used.
Put up a picture of a firearm by itself, promoting violence.
Put up a picture of a hunter, get a complaint about cruelty to animal.
Put up a picture of “Bubba”, get complaints of promoting racism.
Glad he stood up for his rights.
More and more I’m seeing the bigotry in this type of situations. Substitute any “class” of people in there and see if it would be acceptable.
In an effort of personal self disclosure (so people don’t think I am trying to profit off of other’s ignorance), I own Smith and Wesson stock as well as Victoria’s Secret stock (actually The Limited, but the bulk of their business is Victoria’s Secret). So, I firmly believe that guns and women do go together in a well rounded portfolio.
Dude needs to call Oleg Volk! he takes better pictures with sexier models!
Bob S.: Unfortunately, you are probably quite right… Her problem was never with the pictures, it was simply with the firearms. Why people have such an irrational fear of inanimate objects, I will never understand.
Reputo: “… well rounded…” *sigh* Why do you make it so difficult for me not to make jokes?
Weer’d: No kidding – with some better hardware for the most part too.
