I am an IT consultant with one of the largest companies in India. No, I’m not from India, and no, I’ve never been there. The short version is the small company I worked for was bought last year by this ginormous company I’d never heard of.
So, as a result of that little twist of fate, I work with A LOT of people from India. I am currently on a project with 17 other people, 15 of whom are are here on work visas. Private firearm ownership in India is severely limited so it’s very likely that if you ever meet someone who is from that country they’ve never touched a gun before.
It’s hard to put in to words, but after watching the terror attacks in Mumbai and the protests in Iran I decided that I needed to teach some of these guys how to operate a firearm. About a month ago I was talking to one of my co-workers and decided to ask him if he wanted to learn. It went something like this:
Me: I have a non-work-related question for you. Have you ever shot a gun before?
Co-worker (with a look on his face similar to what you would expect if you asked someone if they’d ever molested a child before): Oh? No no no.
Me: Would you like to?
Co-worker (with possibly the biggest smile I’ve ever seen): OH? YES YES YES!
We eventually got the scheduling worked out, and this past Saturday we went to the local range. My wife and I drove out to his apartment where we had a short safety briefing and I taught co-worker and his wife the Four Rules, the Todd Jarrett Death Grip, and proper sight picture.
I had originally planned to borrow an Ishapore 2A1 from a friend, but that fell through at the last minute. The Ishapore is the bolt-action rifle that India’s police force carries, so I wanted co-worker to be familiar with it.
Instead of the Izzy, we had my M4 style AR-15, WASR-10, Glock 23, and Kel-tec P3AT. Co-worker shot all of them and did suprisingly well with the rifles.

He had a little flinch with the pistols but still shot minute of bad guy with each.

His wife (like my wife) was just along for the ride, though she did succumb to pleadings to shoot the M4.
My wife has been shooting since she was four years old, but she’s not a gunnie. Usually if she agrees to accompany me to the range all she does is load the magazines for the other shooters. A few weeks ago I realized that she hadn’t shot any of my weapons before. In the last year I’ve swapped out primary and backup carry pistols and the last time she went to the range with me I didn’t own the WASR.

I’m one of those people that believes that everyone in the house should know how to use every gun in the house. We learned this weekend that the Glock is a little too big for her hands, but she’s good enough to compensate. For medical reasons, she has to shoot the AK and M4 left-handed. Also, now she knows what it feels like to shoot a mousegun. These are all things you’d like to know before you need them.
All in all, we had a really good day. Co-worker and his wife had a different weekend than they’re used to and when we dropped them off they were both still really excited about the whole experience.

Good on you for reaching out, and good to hear that the new shooters seemed to enjoy the experience. I do admit to some considerable degree of pleasure at seeing once-subjects learning about what it means to be a citizen…
