Man with no felony convictions gets permit

Press goes absolutely insane.
A couple of things to address from the article: First, the guy they talk about isn’t the sort of guy I’d want on the street at all, much less with a carry permit. The prosecutor who decided that beating a cop unconcious was a misdemeanor should be fired. That being said, if he’s not a felon how do we screen him out? We can’t. The real answer here is that he should be in prison right now.
Second, the “500 people in its records of felons whose names appear to match those of gun permit holders” doesn’t really mean anything and is only intended to imply that it’s a one to one match. I have a very unique name, but there’s a track star in Nebraska that has the same name as me and we’re only a couple of years apart. If he were convicted of a felony in Tennessee, there would be a match even though we aren’t the same person. Just as an FYI, there are 54 John Smith’s in the permit holder database and 109 in the convict database.
Lastly, the article notes in a passing mention sort of way that courts aren’t notifying the Department of Safety when people are convicted of felonies. That’s egregious, and it’s not TDOS’s fault.
