Democratic Party control of the White House? Check.
Democratic Party control of the House of Representatives? Check.
Democratic Party control of the Senate? Check.
The only check-and-balance remaining on both the Executive Branch and the Legislative Branch is the Supreme Court, and it is currently more-or-less split 5-4, right-left. Thankfully, Sotomayor’s likely appointment to the Supreme Court will not change that balance, but God help us if one of the right-leaning judges decides s/he has had enough.
Our country was never intended to be run by one political party or ideology; while our Glorious President has always viewed his election as permission for him to rule by fiat, and whether or not he should have that ability, he basically does now.
Does anyone remember what the job of the President was actually supposed to be?

that’s about all.
Give the man a cookie!
Sadly, I am willing to wager that the vast majority of Americans cannot provide that answer… least of all the current sophont occupying the Oval Office.
I just wish those in Washington would honor the oath they swore when they took office…. you know, that whole “support/protect and defend the Consitution” thing.
For that matter… this practice of referring to those same people as “our leaders” is demonstrative of the problem. They are NOT our leaders, they are our servants. High time they started acting like it, and we started acting like their bosses.
Honoring that oath would require them to actually read the Constitution, first… Furthermore, it would require them to actually serve the people (as you mention), not simply exist to appropriate as much power for themselves as they possibly can.
Unfortunately, today’s subclass of “politicians” would never do such a thing…
