not always crap

Well, it is looking like my shiny new XTi will be headed back to see its maker. Neither I, nor Better Half, nor a friend of ours, can get it to focus properly on much of anything. People are almost never in focus, and even still-lifes like buildings and the like are averaging about 50%. Unfortunately, that is simply not satisfactory. I have tried letting the camera decide what to focus on – that does not work. I have tried doing center-only focus – that does not work. I have tried turning on the speaker to ensure that it is actually focusing, and that little red flash I saw was not just the system faking me out – that does not work. I have tried using a tripod – that does not work. I have tried using a flash all the time – that does not work. I have tried damn near everything I can think of… The camera has been set on “AI Focus” the entire time (I have not mucked with “One Shot” focus nor “AI Servo”), but if one setting out of three does not work, that simply is not acceptable.
Anywise, I did manage to capture a few moments in a useful fashion, and one is below. Both images are clickable for much larger versions, and while the first one is just the standard *.jpg that was output by my camera (after being run through Picasa’s “I’m Feeling Lucky” system), the latter is an HDR composite of a *.RAW file that was adjusted for exposure.
I like HDR.
