Amazon.com
has recently release a relatively interesting e-book reader called a “Kindle
“, and more and more publishers are making more and more books available to download into it.
Two such books that were available on the Kindle were 1984
and Animal Farm
, both written by the inimitable George Orwell
.
Apparently the publisher of these two books decided that they no longer wanted these two books published on Amazon’s Kindle, so Amazon not only removed them from the Kindle’s online store, but they also remotely deleted the books from every Kindle in America, without notification or warning.
The people who purchased the books have received a refund, and the Kindle contract and book licensing may technically allow such a thing to happen, but that does not make it any more right or acceptable.
I would say, “How Orwellian,” but I think the situation in general beats me to it.
