65 gunmen at restaurant in Nashville!

Tennessee Firearms Association meetings* are held the third Tuesday or the month, and there are chapters in Nashville, Knoxville, and Memphis. As I said in my intial post, I was called away on business this morning so I was not able to make the Nashville Chapter meeting, but they were beta testing a live stream over the internet, with chat.
I was able to watch the TFA meeting from my hotel room 700 miles away. What a world we live in.
Couple of high points from tonights meeting:
Bob Pope, who used to run a large gun show in middle Tennessee, is planning on sending every permit holder in the state a free newsletter. It seems that Mr Pope is one of those organizations that would like access to the permit holder database. I’m opposed to his idea, but he’s allowed under current law to do what he’s doing. Even if the permit database confidentiality law passes, he will still have that list of 239,000 permit holders’ addresses.
When asked about the permit database confidentiality bill, John Harris, Executive Director, said something along the lines of “as long as they aren’t going to publish it in the newspaper or on the internet, we don’t have a problem with organizations getting the database.”
Later on in the meeting, John was directly asked (by yours truly, via chat) if the TFA was one of those organizations that wanted to be able to contact permit holders directly. His response was that the TFA might use the list if available, but was not lobbying for or against allowing organizations to access the list for direct-mailing purposes. That’s not as strong a stand as I like, but if you think about it there’s not nearly the abusive potential as what the Commercial Appeal did.
There was some discussion about a range that was unilaterally closed by the TVA. A legislative staffer got up and said that the reason the range was closed was because some kids were going out there and blowing up propane tanks. “If they just get a rangemaster out there, they’ll open the range back up.”
*Disclaimer: I am very active in the Nashville chapter, and John Harris is the attorney I will call if I am ever involved in a shooting.

Its a fine line to walk. Our members are mostly expressing concern about public redistribution of their names. The desire of some organizations to have access for private communications is one that has arisen and its not clear how it will be handled.

  • On the TFA and permit holder confidentiality…

This story was brought to my attention by my co-blogger and host linoge. What seems to have happened here is that a TV reporter in Nashville logged on to the TFA’s web forum and cherry-picked a quote to make it…
