If you ever wanted to buy a Chrysler car, you might want to do so soon:

President Barack Obama announced Thursday a merger between Italy’s Fiat and stricken US auto giant Chrysler, which is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy after debt-restructuring talks collapsed.

Speaking personally, Chrysler has not made a car I was interested in for quite some time now, possibly excluding the Crossfire, and that just barely. Apparently, I am not alone, given how Chrysler’s finances have been suffering of late, and given how none of the Chrylser line are recommended by Consumer Reports. However, once Fix It Again Tony gets thrown into the mix, you have a merger of one company that America seems to be disinterested in, and another company that America has a long-term history outright hating due to shoddy craftsmanship, poor design, and horrific maintenance.
Explain to me how this is a good idea?

  • Isn’t it a bit scary that the merger announcement was made by Obama? It’s almost like he wants us to know that he’s declared himself in charge of American business instead of us just assuming that’s his aim. This is the exact type of thing that makes conservatives scream “SOCIALISM!”
    Ugh.

  • Well, considering that the United States Government now has a significant share of quite a few major corporations and banks… well, he is probably not that far off. Is it right? Absolutely not. But it is where we are headed…
