no brass for you!

Both The Smallest Minority and Tam already have this situation well in-hand, but spreading the word certainly will not hurt…
It seems as though the Defense Logistics Agency has decided to start destroying once-fired brass before they sell it to the public:

Dear Valued Customer:

Please take a moment to note important changes set forth by the Defense Logistics Agency:

Recently it has been determined that fired munitions of all calibers, shapes and sizes have been designated to be Demil code B. As a result and in conjunction with DLA’s current Demil code B policy, this notice will serve as official notification which requires Scrap Venture (SV) to implement mutilation as a condition of sale for all sales of fired munitions effective immediately. This notice also requires SV to immediately cease delivery of any fired munitions that have been recently sold or on active term contracts, unless the material has been mutilated prior to sale or SV personnel can attest to the mutilation after delivery. A certificate of destruction is required in either case.

Thank you,

DOD Surplus

Scottsdale, AZ 85254

Georgia Arms has more (and has discontinued sales of .223 and .308 until this situation is corrected):

Attention!!

Due to new government regulations concerning the purchasing of surplus brass, we are removing sales of all 223 and all 308 until further notice. Below is a copy of the email we recieved from Goverment Liqudiations.

“Effective immediately DOD Surplus, LLC, will be implementing new requirements for mutilation of fired shell casings. The new DRMS requirement calls for DOD Surplus personnel to witness the mutilation of the property and sign the Certificate of Destruction. Mutilation of the property can be done at the DRMO, if permitted by the Government, or it may be mutilated at a site chosen by the buyer. Mutilation means that the property will be destroyed to the extent prevents its reuse or reconstruction. DOD Surplus personnel will determine when property has been sufficiently mutilated to meet the requirements of the Government. “

This is a huge waste of taxpayer’s money. The value of these products is reduced by 80% by going from a recycled product to a scrap product.

CALL YOUR CONGRESSMAN!!!!!!!!!

Even if you do not purchase remanufactured ammunition or once-fired brass, this decision will have impacts far and wide throughout the ammunition community. Ammunition is already in remarkably short supply, with prices two, three, or even four times higher than they were just five years ago (a combination of both the limited supply, and an increase in raw material costs). Removing remanufactured brass from the field will only decrease the supply flow that much more, raising prices across the market all over again.
Just like the “green bullets” push, this is nothing more than a back-door attack on our rights, and should be treated as such – after all, any politician with a clue knows that firearm-related bills are a non-starter these days, but no one said anything about ammunition, did they?
I can only echo what Georgia Arms said: Please contact your Congressmen, and explain to them how much a bad idea this really is. Other than that, the NRA is already aware of the situation and working on it, as is the JPFO, but the members of other organizations such as the SAF, GOA, and the rest should be sure their lobbying arms are aware of this assault and our objection to it.
Every firearm owner with a clue has been expecting the administration of President Barack Hussein Obama to start attacking our Constitutionally-protected rights since he first took his oath. I guess since the frontal method (complete with a plea of “It’s for Mexico!”) failed before it even launched, they are moving on to more… devious… methods.
I have said it before, and I will say it again – it is going to be a long 1408 days, 1 hour, 10 minutes…

In light of some recent news, a method for finding cheap ammunition is going to become more and more important as the days go on, the hoarding increases, the cost of raw materials goes up, and supply finds itself unable…

  • I remember when they wanted to do something to the bullets so they could ID them. I had an idea they would be coming after ammo. They tried to number the amount of ammo we could buy out here in California. These are some wacky, dangerous times…

  • Yeah, Kalifornistan seems to be where all of this stupidity starts… microstamping, lead-free ammunition, licenses for ammunition purchases and sales, driver’s licenses for the same…
Been there, done that, not going back.
We just have to be sure their particular breed of stupidity spreads no farther.

  • and the plot thickens

Kevin, over at The Smallest Minority, has been keeping up with the new brass-mutiliation edict from our government, and points to this update: Now all brass ammunition will have to be shredded, and sold as scrap. Georgia Arms, who brought…
