not only no

But hell no.
It is this kind of gos-se that make me seriously concerned for the future of our country:

Printed in a size that easily fits into pocket or purse, this book is an anthology of quotations borrowed from Barack Obama’s speeches and writings. POCKET OBAMA serves as a reminder of the amazing power of oratory and the remarkable ability of this man to move people with his words. His superb and captivating oratory style has earned comparisons to John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King, and this historic collection presents words that catapulted his remarkable rise to the American Presidency. It is an unofficial requirement for every citizen to own, to read, and to carry this book at all times.

There is no doubt about it – that is complete, unadulterated, unmitigated, absolute bullshit.
I am somewhat relieved that, after poking around the internet and Google for a few minutes, I can find no mention of the new President’s administration supporting, encouraging, or propagating this farce, but not everyone will actually bother to check – unfortunately, there will be people suckered in by this non-existent “requirement”, and, even worse, there are those who will want that requirement to be in place.
Understandably, this “Pocket Obama” is being rightfully compared to the “Pocket Mao”, another book about another national leader that was also an “unofficial requirement” for that nation’s people. Do we really want to go down that path? (One part of me sincerely wishes this comparison is not lost on the publishers, and that this entire thing is some kind of farsical joke… but the larger part of me really, really doubts that.)
To put it simply, I will never carry a “Pocket Obama” with me, whether the manufacturer says it is an “unofficial requirement”, whether the new President’s administration passes down that edict, or whether it becomes and honest-to-God requirement. It is not that I cannot – I certainly have enough pocket space in my normal cargo pants attire – it is that I will not. I do, however, think it is time for me to dig up those pocket-sized Constitutions I have somewhere… before carrying those around becomes a crime (too late).
Oh, and suffice to say, the “History Company” will be receiving no future business from me. I cannot say as though I have ever purchased something from them in the past, but I will go out of my way to ensure I do not in the future. Oh noes, I are de boycotter!
