I could not quite decide whether to file this report by the Associated Press as humor or firearm-related:
The ATF lost 76 weapons and hundreds of laptops over five years, the Justice Department reported Wednesday, blaming carelessness and sloppy record-keeping.
Thirty-five of the missing handguns, rifles, Tasers and other weapons were stolen, as were 50 laptops, the internal audit found. Two of the stolen weapons were used in crimes.

“It is especially troubling that that ATF’s rate of loss for weapons was nearly double that of the FBI and DEA, and that ATF did not even know whether most of its lost, stolen, or missing laptop computers contained sensitive or classified information,” he [Justice Department Inspector General Glenn A. Fine] added.

Additionally, ATF employees did not report 13 of the 76 lost weapons, or 365 of the 418 missing laptops, to internal affairs as required. ATF officials also did not report much of the lost equipment to the Justice Department.

Remember, this is the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives – the selfsame organization that determines what a firearm is, determines who can own different types of firearms, arbitrarily defines words, ignores court rulings, oh, and tries to shut down law-abiding firearm shops for “infractions” as small as abbreviating “yes” or “no” on a form. And, apparently, this organization cannot even keep track of its own firearms, laptops, or other belongings; keep its own books up-to-date and accurate; or even know whether or not personal or classified information was on the laptops stolen from them or missing.
And they are supposed to be watching us?
Somehow, that does not give me a warm fuzzy.

I need to look up the adress of the nearest ATF office. Getting low on ammo, could always use a new weapon or three and laptops always welcome… I suppose the agents are simply selling the things outa the backs of their cars.
Ain’t this a beach? (Use your imagination.) If only we were illegal aliens, maybe we could have as many rights, eh? This is disgusting…no matter whose administration it is. They apparently do not answer to anyone. I have an idea…why should I listen to them?

Exactly, David… One has to wonder where all of those firearms and laptops actually ended up, and who was making a profit off them. It is not as though they simply sprouted legs and headed for greener ranges (though the Brady Bunch would certainly try to have us believe in animate firearms).

And, in reality, Rosemary, they honestly answer to no one. As for why you should listen to them, well, the simple answer is that they can imprison you and destroy your life on trumped up charges that may or may not have any basis in reality whatsoever. Of course, they also frequently ignore their previous decisions and regulations, and do whatever they want regardless… so good luck staying on their good side

There is no oversight of this rogue agency and there are no consequences for its actions, it is a feifdome in DC that runs itself.
And just think, Angel, this organization was spawned by the same government that wants to run our healthcare for us. Encouraging, no?
And thereby hangs the thread, DirtCrashr. No oversight. No accountability. No control. They do as they please, and people are destroyed in their wake. And then they pull a stunt like this, and end up being worse than some of the people they have hassled over the years. If a firearm shop had lost as many guns as they have, I am quite certain the ATF would have taken great pains to shut them down. Funny how that works.
