love-hate relationship

Well, thus far my experience with Vista can pretty much be boiled down to:

"Are you sure?"

"Are you sure?"

"Are you sure?"

*drooooool*

"Are you sure?"

"Are you sure?"

"Are you sure?"

*drooooool*

"Are you sure?"

"Are you sure?"

"Are you sure?"

*drooooool*

"Are you sure?"

"Are you sure?"

"Are you sure?"

*headdesk*

The thing is a beauty to behold, and more than a little capable... but damn it is annoying for it to keep asking if you really mean to do what you just did. And, knowing me, were I to turn that "feature" off, I would then immediately break something, and have no one to blame but myself. Oh well. I think I can manage to forgive the OS for the sake of having hardware that pretty much defines "screams".

just turn it off, thats what i did. Vista is fairly hard to break if you are slightly competent.

Disable UAC. It's easy

Start > MSCONFIG
Click TOOLS tab
scroll down to "Disable UAC", select it, and click Launch.

Reboot, and buh-bye Nag screen.

It's funny though because people bitched and moaned about the lack of security in Windows then, when they gave them security, people bitched and moaned.

I use a Mac at work. It's almost as bad.

Well, apparently, there are a few good reasons to keep it running... I am just not sure if those reasons outweigh putting up with it.

I can give you a better way of living with Windows. In fact, my parents do this technique and have not run anti-virus software in years and STILL have not received a virus since I switched them over.

Create a new user. Add that new user to the User group ONLY (not admin). Now, log in only as that user. If you need to install software, you can use the Admin account's information to do it, but as long as you run as a standard user, you pretty much can't get viruses (you won't have the permission to do any damage).

Literally, my folks have been running for 5 or 6 years in this configuration and have had nothing happen to them.

It's slightly less annoying than the UAC system.

That certainly would prevent you from doing anything untoward with your Windows installation, unless you are absolutely sure that is what you want to do. Unfortunately, I am an incorrigible tinkerer, and something tells me that arrangement would cause me a bigger headache ;).

I think once I get my machine tweaked and installed the way I want it, UAC should not be a significant problem (except with Trillian... those two will just not get along), but for the time... Erf.
