One of the favorite arguments of irrational and argumentatively-challenged hoplophobes is to point out that firearms are supposedly phallic extensions for length challenged men... I suppose it is just penis-envy for the large number of women with firearms (at least to those aforementioned morons). So, yeah, the play on words was pretty deliberate :).
