Lately, I admit that the Drudge Report has been pretty much my primary source of news. Sure, I check out the Clinton News Network occasionally, as well as Fox and the BBC, but, more often than not, I go back to Drudge to see what all is going on in the world today.
Why?
Well, I like the consolidated fashion of it – it is not so much a news service, but a news aggregator. Whoever runs it (is Drudge himself still involved?) goes out to all the big news wires and agencies that all of the other people get their news from (Reuters, AP (erroneous though their news often is), and other sources), as well as keeps track of the various local agencies and random other news sites I never think about checking. All of this is apparently read, headlines for it are made, and links to the pages are placed on the Drudge page based on those headlines. It is refreshed more times a day than I can count, and gets a rather substantial readerbase. Due to the randomness of the news presented (you can have things as varied as the upcoming Presidential election and some cat getting stuck up in a tree on the same page), the frequency with which it is updated, and the ease of finding everything all in one place, I frequent it quite regularly.
Since, for the most part, the people at the Drudge Report do not write their own stories, and instead link to other people’s work, the news is as it is, and however the other sources write it. Biases are always evident, but sine an aggregator does not write the news, it is rarely their fault.
That said, you can occasionally find the most hilarious backhanded smacks on the Drudge Report. I invite you to take a look at the image to the left, screencaptured from an earlier version of the Drudge Report from this morning. As I am relatively sure that just about everyone knows, the Democrats held a You-Tube-based debate last night, “televising” it on You Tube, and taking video-based questions from the webpage as well. As with just about every Democratic debate to date, tempers ran a little high, and there was just all manner of backstabbing and ankle-biting as they all vied for the most attention, the best polls (because that is about the only thing that matters to Democrats), and the most distance from their mortal enemies – the Republicans, of course. In the process of it, though, Hillary Clinton said a few interesting things. The quote below is from the “JULY” link on Drudge:
Mr Obama, who leads Democrats in fund raising and is looking to cut Ms Clinton’s lead in polls, said it was important to search for areas “where we can potentially move forward” and added, “I think it’s a disgrace that we have not spoken to them.”
Ms Clinton, the New York senator, disagreed, saying such meetings could be used as propaganda purposes.
“Certainly, we’re not going to just have our president meet with Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez and you know, the president of North Korea, Iran and Syria, until we know better what the way forward would be,” she said.
Fair enough. If there is one thing the Democratic hopefuls always try to do at debates, it is try and distance themselves from one another – almost as much as they try and distance themselves from the Republicans. I mean, that only makes sense – unless you stand out, people are not going to remember you, and if they do not remember you, they are not going to vote for you. Of course, Hillary, being a woman of immeasurable grace, charm, charisma, integrity, and honesty, is hardly one to let her past words get in her way. The quote below is from the “APRIL” link on Drudge (check the dates, if you do not believe me):
Hillary Rodham Clinton on Sunday criticized President Bush’s foreign policy, and said if she were president she would do things differently, including beginning diplomatic talks with supposed enemies and sending envoys throughout the world.
“I would begin diplomatic discussions with those countries with whom we have differences, to try to figure out what is the depth of those differences,” said Clinton, who spoke to about 1,000 people at Luther College in Decorah in northeastern Iowa.
“I think it is a terrible mistake for our president to say he will not talk with bad people. You don’t make peace with your friends — you have to do the hard work of dealing with people you don’t agree with,” said Clinton, who is seeking the Democratic presidential nomination.
Opening talks with other countries doesn’t mean the U.S. won’t defend its interests whenever necessary, she said, “but what it means is that we should discuss other routes before we decide we’re going to pursue military options.
“We cannot provide the leadership we need unless we are willing to try engage the other countries,” she said.
Both are perfectly acceptable stances for a Democratic Presidential hopeful to take – one distances herself from her nearest competitor, and one distances herself from the current, Republican President. Of course, they are also perfectly contradictory.
I was always amazed at how easily and skillfully Bill was able to speak out of three sides of his mouth at once, and lie with a perfectly straight face, somehow convincing everyone that he was not lying. Hell, he lied under oath, in a court of law, and I would wager that the majority of the American public does not believe he lied, and would probably make one hell of an effort to re-elect him, were that possible. Given her actions at the debate, I have no doubt he would be proud of his wife, which alone is more than a little disturbing. The only thing she could have done better is say both statements on the same day… that would have been damnably impressive.
Every time I see an image of the Clintons, be it online, in the papers, or on television, I get the almost irrepressable urge to go somewhere and take a shower. Both of them are despicable, and both of them are willing to do, say, or arrange anything to ensure she takes the White House this time around… and after that, all bets are off. What amazes me is that people are not only unwilling to see this, but willingly bringing it upon themselves. Did we not already learn our lesson with the first iteration of the Clinton “leadership”, that we need to have another go at it before we realize the scumbags they really are?
