this weblog will not be silent
So it seems as though some webloggers are attemtping to organize a One Day of Blog Silence in memory of the Virginia Tech shootings.
See the title of this post if you could not already guess my reaction.
First, silence implies consent and assent, and I will provide neither to this atrocity, nor the person who committed it. This nature of evil requires that those who are against it move, act, and speak broadly and loudly, vociferously proclaiming their simultaneous repugnance for and repudiation of that evil... drawing the line in the sand, so to speak.
Second, a "day of silence", or a minute, or an hour, or any measure of time, on a digitally-published weblog that will be archived for all time and is available at any time... makes no sense. What do you want me to do? Take down my weblog for the day? Come on - what exactly will that prove?
Third, would it not be a better expenditure of time to widely and clearly remember those who were lost... their lives, their memories, their impacts upon the world around them, instead of remaining spinelessly silent in the wake of their atrocious murders? I would tell you exactly how I would feel if I was murdered in a similar fashion and remembered by a "day of silence"... but I try to refrain from that kind of language on this weblog.
As such, this weblog will be following the lead of Venomous Kate, and will not be silent on the 30th. I do not know exactly what I will be writing about then, but I will not be silent for some empty and pointless token guesture of surrender.
For evil to succeed, all that needs happen is for good men to do nothing. Explain to me how a "day of silence" is anything except "nothing".
Update: Looks like Wizbang will be following my and Kate's lead... nifty.

As I promised a few days ago, this weblog will not be silent upon this, the "One Day of Blog Silence". Silence amounts to nothing more than surrender at best... consent/assent at the worst, and it is something I will... Read More

roger with u bro'...
it doesn't make any sense...
as soon as I saw the post on yahoo360 blog I exactly felt in the languages what u r not gonna express in your blog...
I don't either in the comments field...
I watched the website with horror actually...
how come they act so foolish?
anyways...I searched a little through technorati to see what the bloggers themselves are reacting with this tremendous treachery I might say to those killed brutally in Virginia...and they are extending the silent tribute to even the deceased ones all over the world now...ohh...come on...
anyways...I found your blog at the first of the returned results and I am quite honored by your decision...
I admire your thoughts and welcome your decision of not keeping the silence...
c ya...
Thanks for your thoughts, Chain. I, too, am somewhat sickened about how this "day of silence" is supposed to be for some higher message too, as if they were intentionally *trying* to dilute the message - what little of that there is to begin with.
If you, or anyone else, have any suggestions of what to write on the 30th, feel free to leave a comment. And thanks again!
