homogenization
In my wanderings about the blogosphere, the outrage against the rioters burning embassies and holding violent, offensive, and inflamatory riots is about as strong as the outrage against the cartoonists who "caused" (and, yes, I use that term loosely, sarcastically, and not at all honestly) the Muslim reaction. Some places, however, are attempting to take the high road by saying that the rioters are only indicative of the radical sects of Islam, and their actions should not be applied to the broad whole.
Some parts of me want to believe that. They really do. But then I remember the visible, palpable, and public outrage of most Christians when their religion is perverted to be a rallying cry for abortion-clinic bombers, or for the KKK... And then I remember the lack of Christian riots and museum burnings when the Piss Christ, or the "Holy Virgin Mary", arrived on the art scene... And then I just have to sit back and shake my head.
I know there are moderate Muslims. Believe me, I do. And I am relatively certain that they outnumber the radical sects of that misguided religion. But, for God's sake, why are they not doing something to stop this? Silence is tacit agreement, and from my narrow, American, imperialistic, racist, bigoted, infidel point of view (and, yes, again, I am being somewhat sarcastic), I am hearing all manner of silence from the moderate Muslims... an occasional peep here or there, but where is the hue and cry? Where are the religious leaders calling for a cease of hostilities? Where are the average people doing the same?
"Right Wingers" are not just making things up when they "broadly condemn" Muslims as radical, religion-crazed zealots intent upon taking over the world and subjugating it to their own laws... The religion, and all its members, are doing it to themselves.
